STATEMENT FROM SUNSET JUNCTION
Sunset Junction wishes to express its deepest gratitude and appreciation to all of it's supporters, well-wishers, the bands, the fans, the at risk youth, it's internal team and to the majority in the community who stood up for us at the Board of Public Works hearing on Monday, August 22. It is with great sorrow that The Junction will not take place this year, in continuing it's 31-year legacy as one of the most popular and anticipated end-of-summer events. We started in this community more than 30-years-ago, when it was a broken-down, crime and gang-infested, transitional region, that was prone to violence. At that time, the economic infrastructure could never have supported the current crop of businesses that have since moved into the area the last decade, and the popular eastside music clubs did not exist.
Sunset Junction was born as the olive branch that bridged the gay and latino communities toward a better understanding and acceptance of each other. It was an innovative idea at the time, with the gangs calling a truce and acting as Security for the first-ever Sunset Junction. We're proud of our longstanding work in the community with at risk youth, the Farmer's Market and Triangle Park, along with our participation and our contribution to the history of building Sunset Junction, as it is widely known today.
The Sunset Junction Fair has long defined Silverlake, and without it, the region never would have benefited from it's current standing as a tastemaker destination. You could not have had one, without the other, and it saddens us that so many have lost sight of this highly important and significant factor.
We also want to clarify that we did everything that we could to move Sunset Junction forward for all concerned, and that Sunset Junction 2011 could have potentially moved forward, with the required proof of funds documented and delivered to BOPW, through a generous loan from Live Nation and our loyal supporters (that has since been returned). The short-sighted decision to not accept the $142,000 in fees for the city, is a great loss across-the-board to so many. The big picture clearly was not in focus, to the overall detriment of the community in full.
We again gratefully thank all of our friends and supporters who clearly stepped-up to save the special magic and legacy of Sunset Junction. We are reviewing next steps and we will be reporting back soon.

Sunset Junction Youth Program was created as a result of the community being pulled apart. People want their communities to be livable again, free of gangs, drugs and violence. The Youth Program has been a success in getting neighborhood youth involved in taking action in the community. |
